Open Feedwater Heater Closed Feedwater Heater
They are simple and inexpensive. Due to internal tubing, they are complex and expensive.
They have good characteristics. Less effective since the two streams are not allowed to be in direct contact.
For each heater, a separate pump is required to handle the feedwater to maintain the same pressure for extracted steam and feedwater. They do not require a separate pump for each heater since the extracted steam and the feedwater can be at different pressures.
Feedwater leaving the saturated. Feedwater leaving the heater may not be saturated due to reduced effectiveness.
Design will be simple. Design will be complex.
Heat transfer capacity will be quite good as compared with a closed feedwater heater. Heat transfer capacity will be less effective as compared with an open feedwater heater.
Open feedwater heater will be less costly. Closed feedwater heater will be more costly.
